Floating and Sinking

The last two days in school we have been studying floating and sinking and what causes something to float or sink. We then carried out an experiment to see what will float and sink and recorded our results. We watched the movie below before we began our experiment.

Capital Letters

The last two weeks the children have been learning when to use a capital letter. Here in room 18 we are finding it hard to remember all the rules but we are trying very hard. Ms. Nugent tells us the harder we try the better we will get at remembering when to put a capital letter!!! 🙂

So what are the rules???????? :-/

1. We use a capital letter at the start of a sentence.

2. We use a capital letter for some ones name.

3. We use a capital letter for the name of a place.

4. We use a capital letter for the word I.

5. We use a capital letter for the months of the year.

6. We use a capital letter for the days of the week.

Here is a link to some games you can play at home to practice the above rules.

Magnets

Yesterday, Monday 16th the boys and girls got to complete some fun experiments with magnets. The children learned a number of facts:

1. Magnets are a type of metal.

2. Only some other types of metals will stick to a magnet.

3. There are two sides to a magnet: the North Pole and the South Pole.

4. We learned two new words; Attract and Repel. Attract means the metals want to join together with the magnet and repel means they want to push apart.   The boys and girls also found out that only opposite poles will stick together.

Why not ask your son/ daughter tonight how many of the above facts

Pancake Tuesday

Today is Pancake Tuesday. We sang a lovely song about cooking a pancake. We wrote a pancake recipe which will be up on the notice boards this evening for all you mams and dads to see. Ms. Nugent was so proud of the excellent writing.

After break Ms. Nugent had a big surprise for us all. There was a big plate of pancakes, chocolate sauce, lemon juice and yummy fresh fruit to put on our pancakes.

oa

Today in class the children learned another new sound. Last week the children were introduced to the new sound ai. Ms. Nugent told the children that something special happens when any two of the five vowels come together. “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking”. Last week “a” in ai did the talking and today “o” in oa did the talking. Sing along at home and don’t forget the action!! (put your hand to your mouth in “shock”) Think of some oa words at home tonight; I would love to hear some tomorrow. 🙂

I will leave links to some writing activities for oa words.

Scríobhleabhar

Ms. Nugent recently entered the boys and girls into an Irish Writing competition “Scríobhleabhar”. The children have been working very hard since they came back to school after the Christmas holidays writing their books. We were very lucky to have Ms. Quinn helping us with this competition. Here are some videos of the finished books. Ms. Nugent will keep you all posted at home on the competition and how we get on it.

(For some reason one or two videos went sideways when posted, Sorry 😥 )

ai sound

Last year the children worked very hard in Junior Infants learning all their sounds. Today we learned a new sound (ai). Ms. Nugent reminded the children of the 5 vowels we learned before Christmas – a,e,i,o,u.

Ms. Nugent told the children today that when two vowels “go walking, the first vowel does the talking”; so with the ai sound we only say and hear the a and we do not say the i.

Here are some vidoes you can watch at home.
